In the ever-evolving landscape of search engines and digital media, recent developments have taken centre stage. Google's experimentation with sitelinks in a bubble/pill format promises a potentially more visually engaging search experience. However, challenges arise as Google acknowledges instances where bot protection services may inadvertently apply a 'noindex' directive. Meanwhile, Bing introduces expandable sections in its search page insights, offering users a more detailed and interactive experience. In a surprising turn, The New York Times takes legal action, suing both OpenAI and Microsoft for alleged 'illegal copying.' Furthermore, Google rekindles exploration with longer search result snippets, suggesting a continuous quest for refining and enhancing the user search experience. These developments underscore the dynamic nature of the search engine ecosystem and the ongoing pursuit of innovation and legal considerations in the digital realm.

Google: Sometimes Bot Protection Services Serve Noindex Directive

Sometimes there's bot-protection (or a login, interstitial, etc.) triggering that has a noindex on it, stated Google's John Mueller on X.

It would be preferable for them to serve 503 server status codes, he continued. "Better would be to use 503 for server-side blocks like bot-protection," he stated.

Bing Search Page Insights Expandable Sections

The page insights light bulb feature on Bing has been improved to allow you to expand and collapse the parts in the overlay page previews. In my experience, it opens by default, but you may click a button to collapse the content displayed on the page preview.
